Judge Joiner seeks to apply his experience from over 26 years of judicial service to benefit litigants who seek to solve their disputes through Alternative Dispute Resolution.
Prior to his election to the bench, Judge Joiner was in private practice in Shelby County, concentrating in general civil practice. Judge Joiner served Shelby County as Circuit Court Judge beginning in 1993 and as Presiding Circuit Judge beginning in 2005. In 2002, he created the Shelby County Drug Court, which became a model statewide. He was instrumental in creating drug courts throughout Alabama and was one of the initial organizers of the Alabama Association of Drug Court Professionals. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Drug Court Professionals (NADCP).
In February 2011, Judge Joiner was appointed to the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals and was elected to a full term in November 2012. While on the Court, Judge Joiner participated in thousands of decisions and authored hundreds of published opinions. In addition to his duties on the Court of Criminal Appeals, Judge Joiner served from 2012 to 2018 as the Chief Judge of the Court of the Judiciary.
